In May of 2017, Sophia Corah was an eighteen-year-old college freshman when her life suddenly changed. One morning she woke up with blurry vision. At first, she thought it was just an allergy. But within weeks, she could no longer read the board in class or even see the road clearly while driving. By August of that year, doctors told her she was legally blind. She was diagnosed with keratoconus, a disease that causes the cornea to thin and bulge into a cone shape. The diagnosis was devastating. Sophia fell into depression for nearly eight months, struggling to accept a life with limited sight.
Needing to be closer to family and more support, Sophia transferred to Adams State University in Colorado to study psychology. There, she worked as a resident assistant and met another RA named Christian. Christian quickly became a steady presence in her life. He guided her around campus, helped with her classes, made sure she ate meals, and studied with her by reading material out loud. Sophia leaned on him, and though she was still adjusting to her vision loss, she found comfort in his friendship.
Christian did more than offer emotional support—he also researched medical options for Sophia. He discovered a surgery that might help restore her vision. The procedure cost over $20,000 and wasn’t covered by insurance, so Christian organized a fundraiser. Thanks to his determination, the money was raised in just five weeks. In October of 2018, Sophia underwent surgery, and her long recovery began.
The healing was slow. At first, she wore scleral contact lenses for only short periods of time. But little by little, her vision improved. In 2019, she had a breakthrough moment: she could see faces again. The very first face she recognized was Christian’s—and he was, in her words, “even more handsome than I could have imagined.” By August of that year, Sophia’s vision had improved to 20/20.
During her recovery, Sophia and Christian stayed close. Three years after meeting him, Sophia realized just how deeply she valued his support and companionship. In October 2020, she drove seven hours to see him and finally confessed her feelings. To her joy, Christian felt the same way. Their relationship blossomed quickly. Christian proposed in January 2021, and they were married that June.
Today, Sophia and Christian live in New Mexico, where Sophia works as a science teacher. She shares her journey to raise awareness about keratoconus, encouraging others to seek treatment early. Looking back, she credits Christian’s unwavering support with not only helping her regain her vision but also leading her to discover the love of her life.
