The Nine Souls of the Cat

Link List

Read the Story

In southern China, long ago, people believed that cats were different from other animals. A cat did not have one soul. It had nine.

The number nine, 九 (jiǔ), was a powerful number. It meant long life, completeness, and eternity. Because of this, people said each cat carried nine souls, and each soul had a special purpose.

At night, when the house was dark, one soul helped the cat move quietly and see clearly. This soul mastered darkness and watched for danger.

Another soul protected dreams. If a child slept badly, a cat might sit nearby, guarding the dreams and keeping fear away.

There was a soul for the home. This soul brought harmony and blessing to the household. There was also a soul that warned of fire. If a cat suddenly cried near the stove, people paid attention.

Some souls were invisible. One could see spirits. Another could feel sadness and bring comfort without words.

The final soul was the quietest of all. It did not act in life, but waited. When life ended, this soul guided the spirit safely onward.

People did not fear cats. They respected them. A cat was not just a pet. It was a guardian with many responsibilities.
