📖Read the Lesson: The Many Sounds of U
English words that begin with the letter U can sound very different. In this lesson, we focus on three common sounds at the beginning of a word.
| Sound | Example Words (beginning with U) | How it feels |
|---|---|---|
| /yu/ (“yoo”) | use unit uniform unicorn united university unique uterus | We hear a clear “y” sound before the vowel. |
| /ʌ/ (“uh”) | umbrella uncle under ugly up unlucky unless | This is the short U sound — like in “cup.” |
| /u/ (“oo”) | Uber ukulele utopia | A long “oo” sound, like in “food.” |
Note: The sound /ʊ/ (“uʊ”) — like in put or push — is very rare at the beginning of a word in English. We mention it for contrast, but we mostly practice the three sounds above.
