📖Read the Lesson: U in the Middle of Words
In Part 1, we looked at words that begin with the letter U. In this lesson, we look at the sound of U in the middle of words.
| Sound | Example words | How it feels |
|---|---|---|
| Short U — “uh” | bus lunch summer cousin study public | Mouth relaxed, like in “cup,” “fun,” “luck.” |
| Long U — “oo” | student super June July ruler computer music | Lips more round, like in “food,” “two,” “blue.” |
| “Put” U — between “oo” and “uh” | put push cushion sugar | A short sound, like “book” or “good.” We will see it, but we mainly practice the first two sounds. |
Important: The spelling “u” does not always tell you the sound. You must listen. But many short U words are common: bus, lunch, summer, and many long U words are school words: student, computer, ruler.
