📖Read the Lesson: I at the Beginning of Words
In English, words that begin with the letter I can have two common sounds at the beginning: short I (“ih”) and long I (“eye”).
| Sound | Example words (begin with I) | Pattern idea |
|---|---|---|
| Short I — “ih” | in if it into inside insect immigrant internet | Often I + consonant: in, if, it, inside, immigrant |
| Long I — “eye” | I ice idea island iron item icon | Often I + consonant + vowel: idea, item, icon. Also some special words: island, iron. |
Important: The spelling with I does not always tell you the sound. You must listen. Many common short I words are small grammar words (in, is, it, if), and many long I words are “ice” or “idea” words (idea, item, icon).
