📖Read the Lesson: Final E That We Pronounce
In many English words, the final letter E is silent: make, like, home, time. But in some common words, the final E is not silent. We say a small extra sound at the end.
```| Type | Examples | How we say it |
|---|---|---|
| Final E is silent | make like home time hope note | We do not say a sound for the last E. It changes the vowel before it. |
| Final E is not silent (often sounds like “ay”) |
cafe resume karate Chile anime fiance cliche expose saute | Often sounds like “ay”: ka-FAY, reh-zoo-MAY, ka-RAH-TAY, CHEE-LAY, AH-nee-MAY, fee-AHN-SAY, kli-SHAY, ek-spo-ZAY, saw-TAY. |
| Final E is not silent (sounds like “ee”) |
recipe | We say an “ee” sound at the end: RESS-uh-pee. |
Many of these words come from other languages (French, Spanish, Japanese). The spelling looks English, but the sound at the end is from the original language. That is why listening is very important.
