Ximena and her friend Ruslan planned a photography expedition to Yellowstone. From the airplane window, the park looked like a vast patchwork of forests and lakes. On their first day, they hiked into the wilderness, far from the busy roads. In the cold morning air, steam drifted slowly over a hot spring. Ruslan read that water can circulate freely in a hot spring.

Ximena took a vivid photo of the bright colors at the edge of the water. A ranger explained that tiny living things flourish in the hot water. Later, they visited the canyon that the Yellowstone River carved over thousands of years. A waterfall plunged between canyon walls streaked with yellow and red. At a viewpoint where two trails intersect, they stopped to eat lunch.

Ruslan read that wolves were eliminated from the park long ago but were brought back in 1995. He also learned that the fires of 1988 alarmed people around the world. However, the fires also transformed old forests and made space for new trees. Ximena thought about how Yellowstone has endured fire and change for thousands of years. Before they went home, she photographed Old Faithful, the park's most famous landmark.
