Read the two sentences. Only one word is different, but the story is very different!
A. When I arrived at the party, Luz left. B. When I arrived at the party, Luz had left.
1. In sentence A, did I see Luz at the party?
2. In sentence B, did I see Luz at the party?
3. In sentence B, which action happened first?
had left is the past perfect. We use it for the action that happened first when we talk about two actions in the past.
It means "before that." In sentence B, Luz was already gone when I got there.
STEP 2 Β· UNDERSTAND
π The Big Picture: The "Past of the Past"
The simple past is a time in the past. The past perfect goes back even further, to something that happened before that time.

Yes, she had. / No, she hadn't.
Wh- question
Wh- + had + subject + past participle?
What had she eaten?
π Careful with 'd:She'd eaten = she had eaten (past participle follows). She'd eat = she would eat (base verb follows).
STEP 5 Β· WHEN?
π€ When Do We Use the Past Perfect?
1. The earlier of two past actions When we got to the theater, the movie had already started.
2. To explain a reason in the past I was hungry because I hadn't eaten all day.
3. Something done before a past time or deadline By 2020, Sofia had lived in three countries.
4. Experience before a past moment Saeid had never seen snow before he moved to Chicago.
Signal words
alreadyjustnevereverbeforeafterby the timeby (2020)whenbecause
π‘ Good news: With before and after, the order is already clear, so the simple past is also OK:
After Luz had finished her homework, she watched TV. = After Luz finished her homework, she watched TV.
With when, the past perfect changes the meaning (remember the party!).
STEP 6 Β· DON'T MIX THEM UP
βοΈ Present Perfect vs. Past Perfect
Present perfect: have/has + PP Connects the past to now. I have eaten, so I'm not hungry now.
Past perfect: had + PP Connects an earlier past to a later past. I had eaten, so I wasn't hungry at the party.
