  • I = subject (the doer): I called Luis.
  • me = object (receiver): Luis called me.
  • myself = reflexive or emphasis: I taught myself / I baked this myself.

Last Friday, I promised myself a night of fun. Work had worn me out so I texted my friend Luis: “Karaoke with me tonight?” He wrote, “Only if you sing the first song.” I laughed to myself and typed back: “Deal.”

When we arrived, Luis had secretly signed me up. The host told me it was my turn to sing. The lights rose, the music began, and people started to clap. I chose a classic, missed the first note, then surprised myself by landing the chorus like a pro.

After the song, some teachers waved at me. “Join us!” one said. Luis nudged me. “They’re your fans.” I introduced myself and soon we were planning a group number. “Let me try the harmony,” I said.

The lyrics told me exactly when to breathe, so I didn’t panic. When the crowd clapped for us, I bowed, embarrassing myself a little—but I couldn’t stop smiling.

During a break, the host asked me to judge a friendly contest. “Why me?” I asked. “Because you’re honest,” he said. I reminded myself to be kind and chose two winners. One teacher said, “You helped me enjoy myself tonight.”
