The Gerund Challenge

-ing nouns • subject • object • prep • complement

Full sentences must end with “.” or “?”. If punctuation is the only issue, you’ll get a gentle hint and can fix it.

What is a Gerund?

A gerund is a verb form ending in -ing that functions as a noun (subject, object, object of a preposition, or complement). Don’t confuse it with a present participle (also ends in -ing) used in verb phrases (is running) or as adjectives (a running shoe).

  • Subject: Swimming is relaxing.
  • Direct Object: I enjoy reading.
  • After Prepositions: She apologized for being late.
  • Subject Complement: His job is teaching.
