Judy Garland (1922–1969)

Judy Garland was one of the most famous entertainers of the 20th century. She was born Frances Ethel Gumm on June 10, 1922, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Her parents were performers, and she grew up on stage. As a child, she performed with her two older sisters in a group called the Gumm Sisters. In 1935, she signed a contract with MGM, one of the biggest film studios in Hollywood at the time.

Garland became a star when she played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939). Her performance, especially her song “Over the Rainbow,” made her famous around the world. However, her success came with pressure. MGM controlled many parts of her life, including her appearance, diet, and work schedule. Studio doctors gave her pills to keep her awake and others to help her sleep, which affected her health later in life.

She starred in many musicals, including Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). She also appeared in serious films, including A Star Is Born (1954), which many critics consider one of her best roles.

Garland had a strong connection with live audiences. Her 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall is often called one of the greatest live performances in music history. The recording won several Grammy Awards.

Garland faced many personal challenges, including anxiety and addiction. She was married five times and had three children, including Liza Minnelli. Minnelli later became a famous performer herself and won an Academy Award for her role in Cabaret. Like her mother, she became known for her powerful voice and strong stage presence.

Judy Garland did not see herself as beautiful, even though many people admired her unique look. Studio executives often tried to change her image, which affected her confidence but also helped shape her emotional performance style.

Judy Garland died on June 22, 1969, in London at the age of 47. Today, she is remembered as one of the greatest performers in film and music history.
